Catching up with other artists
Terry and I had a few days in Norfolk where we spent a lovely day with Alwyn and June Crawshaw. They have both had very a busy year working on a new joint biography as well as painting for their exhibition next year.
Filming for DVDs
I have just had a fun couple of days at Teaching Art in Newark, filming DVDs for Derwent. We always have great fun filming but its really to do with having a friendly team, most of the hard work takes place behind the scenes afterwards, with the editing and producing of the final DVDs. So my thanks go to Garry and Richard for their patience and professional skills over the two days.

These will be available next year and include Pastels and Pastel pencils, Artists and Studio pencils as well as a wide range of sketching media.

Workshop painting roses.
We had two lovely days painting roses in Stanton on 28th and 29th October and this was the result. The first day we learnt all the techniques and the second day we put them all together to create our paintings. These techniques encouraged us to adopt a looser approach by using my unique Pyramid brush and Stippler.

Newcastle Upon Tyne Show October
How lovely it was to see so many familiar faces, and many new ones too.
I did some fun workshops which included making festive cards and demonstrating how fabulous watersoluble pencils can be. Thank you to everyone that came to the SAA stand and said hello.

Wye Workshop in Kent this August
We had three fabulous days drawing farmyard animals using tinted charcoal, drawing pencils and colousoft.
We bagan drawing cats merging the tinted charcoal and creating some great little studies then we added the drawing pencils and produced some pictures of sheep. Sheep with character! The drawing pencils are very subtle as shown in the example of the cow we did, these are an ideal medium for those who like soft neutral colours. Everyone achieved some great results and without exception, all liked the tinted charcoal media best.

Patchings Art Show 5th - 8th June
Thank you to all of you who came and said hello, watched the demonstrations or just came and had a good day out! We had three sunny, hot days with the brass band playing, and a lively friendly atmosphere.

ParisFiona and Terry in Paris

We had a wonderful few days visiting Paris in January. The Musee d'Orsay (an absolute MUST if you like The Impressionists) you really need to allow almost an entire day (depending on how your legs hold out) there is so much to see. My favourites were the Van Gogh paintings and Monet, especially his hay stacks, painted using beautiful soft complementary colours, fabulous. Of course I just had to see the Pyramid, I know many people dont like it especially as it sits surrounded by beautiful old buildings, but I loved it.
No Artist can go to Paris without seeing The Monmartre with the Painters all avidly doing portraits and selling their wares. They seem to work in even the dimmest of evening light, still capturing any willing passer-by who wants their portrait doing. We sat outdoors watching the world go by and stayed until it was quite dark, painters were packing up by then, but some were still working!
Paris is such a lovely city to visit at any time of year. I very much like to paint buildings, especially those with domes so I was able to take lots of reference photos to use back home. I have some lovely ones of The Sacre Coeur which I intend to do using water-soluble pencils. Those of you who have watched the demonstration I do of St Pauls Dome will no doubt be able to see why I chose this. Cities can offer wonderful subjects for painting and of course Paris is such a fabulous one to visit. I am sure it will feature in a few forthcoming paintings.

Painting on holiday.

St Lucia LadyI use watercolour pencils to produce some quick sketches on location, then, back at the hotel I add the water. Once home, I then used the sketches to paint some fresh, direct paintings.

It is so exciting to paint directly onto the paper, small wet-in-wet shapes glistening on the surface, then dropping in different colours, creates some wonderful effects. I particularly enjoy these strong tonal contrasts and simple shapes.

Sketch book studies are a vital part of my reference for paintings. Some of these painting sketches are available to see in the May 08 Issue of The Artist magazine.
